Death Blows

Standard

You learn to accept it,
somehow-

the death of
another-

while kicking and screaming
against your own. And

you learn to accept that
regret stalks like an

August shadow wet with
venom ready to strike

at the soul. Still, you try to
recall

how innocence felt – before
troubled times

bore their way into your
heart. And you remember

there was a time when
atoms spun their natural

course, and when the sun
lived in the sky,

when mushrooms were a delight
and the shock of waves merely rolled

you up against the shore.
And yet,

You learn to accept it,
somehow-

there’s a death for
all others –

while kicking and screaming
against your own.
